Former Louisiana State Senator Karen Carter Peterson has reported to a federal prison in Bryan, Texas to serve a 22-month sentence for stealing campaign funds to feed her gambling habit.
Peterson admitted she took the money when she was head of the Louisiana Democratic Party, and pleaded guilty to one count of wire fraud in August.
She resigned from her seat representing New Orleans in the state senate in the spring of 2022. Days later, it became public that she was under federal investigation.
Prosecutors said Peterson stole $147,000 in funds from her own campaign account as well as the Louisiana Democratic Party's campaign funds.
