Residents across New Orleans and much of the Gulf South may want to keep the rain gear nearby for the foreseeable future.
LSU Health climatologist Barry Keim says the region is entering an extended stretch of wet weather that could linger into next week.
“By all indications, it’s going to rain quite a bit over the next several days,” Keim said.
Forecast models show multiple rounds of rainfall moving through the area, with some locations potentially receiving up to five more inches over the coming days.
Keim says while the rain is beneficial for improving drought conditions, it could also create problems if storms begin to linger over one area for too long.
“If the weather stalls at any point, flash flooding becomes a possibility,” he said.
The persistent cloud cover and scattered showers may also make it difficult for residents hoping to spend time outdoors.
“There may not be many significant peeks of sunshine for a while,” Keim said.
Meteorologists are encouraging residents to stay weather aware, especially during heavier downpours and periods of slow-moving storms.
For now, Keim says one item should remain close at hand.
“Your best bet is to take an umbrella with you wherever you go,” he said.
