Kenner police are searching for the driver of a car that abandoned a four-year-old girl in the vehicle after a crash.

Police say around 9 p.m. Sunday night, officers observed a car drive around the lowered gates of the railroad crossing at Kenner Ave. and Filmore Street as flashing red lights indicated an oncoming train.

When officers tried to pull the driver over, the driver sped away, leading to a brief car chase, until crashing into a pole a few blocks away in the 1000 block of S. Sibley Street.

Officers say the driver jumped out and managed to slip away on foot. When police checked the car for anyone else, they found the child strapped into her safety seat. Police say they also found methamphetamine and the opioid prescription drug Tramadol.

Investigators identified the suspect as 35-year-old Adarius Hicks of Metairie. Anyone with info on his whereabouts is asked to call Kenner Police at (504) 712-2222 or Crimestoppers at (504) 822-1111 or toll free at (877) 903-7867 (STOP). Callers to Crimestoppers do not have to leave their names and may be eligible for a cash reward for information that leads to an arrest.
