Kenner council approves mayoral 'no confidence' resolution

Kenner council approves mayoral 'no confidence' resolution

Kenner's city council today voted in favor of a "no confidence" resolution directed at Mayor Ben Zahn -- four in favor, three abstentions.

Four Kenner city councilmembers; George Branigan, Kristi McKinney, Gregory Carroll and Brian Brennan want Zahn to resign over allegations his deputy chief administrative officer Chad Pitfield received excessive disaster pay after Hurricane Ida in addition to his regular salary.

The allegations are complicated by claims Pitfield was also getting a paycheck from the Jefferson parish sheriff's office at the same time he was working for Kenner.

Although Zahn has publicly defended the disaster pay that Pitfield and other city employees received, the mayor's office this week announced it had terminated his employment.

Branigan rebuffs the mayor's claim that this is political theater.

"I can guarantee you this has nothing to do with politics, political anything, elections coming up, anything," he said before today's vote. "It's taxpayer motivated."

The resolution is not binding, and Zahn says he will not resign.
