The Treasure Chest riverboat casino in Kenner is hiring, as it prepares to open up on dry land. Treasure Chest is the latest riverboat casino to take advantage of 2018 change in the law.
Not only does the law allow for more potential gambling space, UNO economist Janet Speyrer says it lets casino operators keep their patrons closer to their tables and slots, by making sure that the gambling patron doesn't have to go to far to, say, grab a bite to eat or see a show.
"The casino benefits because the people don't have to go from where they are to another location," said Speyrer. "The other thing they can do is incorporate an entertainment venue. Of course that was impossible on a boat."
Treasure Chest's expansion means four new restaurants where their patrons can eat, then easily get back to the action.
The casino has a job fair coming up this weekend, and is set to open its 47,000 square foot facility later this year.
