Why Louisiana’s Agriculture Commissioner is urging you to check for standing water in your yard

On WWL First News with Tommy Tucker this week, Louisiana’s Commissioner for the Department of Agriculture and Forestry told Tucker now is the time to check and prepare for the pervasive pest problem of termites.

Commissioner Mike Strain explained how standing water can compromise those chemical barriers placed at the base of homes to ward of termites. While spring is often the season for termite swarms, Strain says homeowners can work in advance to protect their property.

“If you have standing water in your yard and if it comes up 24-48 hours and it comes up a couple of inches deep up to your slab, you need to contact your pest control company,” said Strain told Tucker.

“You may have lost that barrier,” he added. “With these hard rains and these continual rains, now is the time to look. Look at your roof, go out on the porch. See if there’s an area that’s discolored or dripping, that means you got a roof leak and you got to fix that because the termites, as you know, are opportunists. They’re looking for a place that has damaged wood. Go around your slab and see if there’s anywhere where the water is getting up the slab.”
