Louisiana breaks another record for COVID hospitalizations, setting a new record of 2,350 according to the Louisiana Department of Health’s update on Thursday.

That is up more than 100 from Wednesday setting a new record for the third day in a row. The Louisiana Department of Health says 91% of the people in the hospital are unvaccinated. The number of patients on ventilators also increased by 34 for a total of 258.


“Really any measure that you look at right now this is the worst that it has ever been,” Louisiana State Health Officer Dr. Joe Kanter tells WWL’s Newell Normand. “And 150 hospitals say we need help, we can’t meet the volume that we are seeing is a real drastic and unprecedented measure.”

More than two million people in Louisiana have had at least one dose of the vaccines. That is roughly more than 44 percent of the state's population.

Completed immunizations are approaching 1.7 million as it is closing in on 38% of the population.

The Department of Health also reports 33 new deaths, 84% of people who died of COVID in Louisiana were unvaccinated.
