Soon, residents in the 504 area code will need to dial the full ten-digit number to make a local call.
Starting October 24, people dialing local numbers will need to dial 504 before the seven-digit number can be completed. The new dialing procedure will impact customers in 36 states and 82 area codes.
The North American Number Planning Administrator made the change so that the national suicide prevention and mental health hotline can use the 988 dialing code.
After the deadline, anyone dialing a local number without the 504 area code will not have their call completed.
