LA Rep. removed from Education Committee chairman for ‘good, bad, ugly’ comment

After his comment about schools teaching what he called the ‘good, bad, ugly’ of slavery, Louisiana Representative Ray Garofalo has been removed as chairman of the House Education Committee.

Garofalo faced backlash for his comment during a discussion between him and New Orleans area Representative Stephanie Hilferty.

The comment came when Garofalo was questioned about his bill that would ban teachers from teaching systemic racism in class.

“If you’re having a discussion on whatever the case may be, slavery, then you can talk about everything dealing with slavery, the good, the bad, the ugly,” said Garofalo.

To which Hilferty retorted, “There is no good in slavery.”

Garofalo quickly walked back his comment and agreed with Hilferty by saying, “You’re right, you’re right. I didn’t mean to imply that.”

The move was reported in a tweet by Louisiana politics reporter Jeremy Alford and retweeted by New Orleans City Councilwoman Helena Moreno.

Since his comment, the Louisiana Black Legislative Caucus worked to remove Garofalo as the chairman of the Education Committee. Garofalo represented District 103, which includes St. Bernard Parish, Plaquemines Parish East, and New Orleans East. His replacement has not been announced.
