Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry on Wednesday announced a statewide hiring freeze.
Landry says his goal in freezing hiring at state agencies is to save taxpayers $20 million a year.
This comes after voters rejected an amendment to the state constitution that would have reworked Louisiana's taxing and spending rules.
"To ensure the long-term fiscal health of Louisiana and protect essential services for our most vulnerable citizens, we must take decisive action now to address revenue shortfalls. By implementing a temporary hiring freeze, we will rein in spending, saving an annualized $20 million," Landry said in a statement.
The Louisiana legislative session begins April 14, and lawmakers will consider a state budget.
Landry says the hiring freeze will help prevent "deeper cuts to healthcare and education."
