A UNO poll on the October 11 New Orleans elections shows City Councilmember Helena Moreno maintains an advantage that could put her in the mayor's office without a runoff, with a narrow window of opportunity for the next most-popular candidates to extend the campaign into November.
The poll, carried out Sep. 20-24, shows Moreno with 49 percent, State Senator Royce Duplessis in second at 15 percent, and City Councilmember Oliver Thomas at 13 percent.
The margin of error is ±4.8 percent.
NOLA.com reports the poll also gauged support for incumbent Mayor LaToya Cantrell, and found it extremely lacking.
Cantrell, who is term-limited and cannot run for reelection, had a 20 percent approval rating, with 51 percent saying they strongly disapprove of her performance and another 15 percent saying they disapprove.
Pollster Ed Chervenak said his survey found that there was a strong correlation between the people who disapproved of Cantrell and supporters of Moreno's.
"Those folks who are unhappy with the mayor's performance and dissatisfied with the city's direction, they're more likely to support Moreno," he said.
