Louisiana State Police is now investigating the grand jury that indicted Attorney General Liz Murrill on 16 criminal counts last week. The Louisiana Supreme Court tossed out that indictment because of procedural errors and a conflict of interest between special prosecutor Laurie White and Attorney General's office.
One analyst says, it'll be a while before state police has all the answers to the questions surrounding the case.
"This has smoke all over the place. (There are) a lot of red flags everywhere," All Things Legal host Doug Sunseri told WWL's Tommy Tucker, adding that the investigation could last "for the next year or two."
Sunseri says State Police will investigate several facets.
"How did this happen? Who pulled the trigger on this?" Sunseri said. "Was it the district attorney who said (wink, wink) I'm going to appoint a special prosecutor, and the special prosecutor is going to bring this evidence before the grand jury? What was the origin of the empaneling of the grand jury?"
Particularly, Sunseri says authorities will determine if local authorities used any underhanded methods to secure the now invalidated indictment.
"We're not really sure who was the behind the scenes to put this case together and--sort of, maybe--put Laurie White up to do this," Sunseri said.
Regardless of the investigation's outcome, Sunseri believes this saga puts a stain on the city of New Orleans and the criminal justice system.
"It's a bad deal. It's going to end ugly. It never should have happened."
