Even though this year's Mardi Gras shouldn't rise to the level of a super spreader, health professionals warn of the close quarters of everyone and are asking the public to take precautions.
Dr. Jennifer Avegno, Director of New Orleans Department of Heath says vaccines are available at many drug stores free or reduced and doctor's offices should be stocked up.
"It's not too late to get your shot. We are doing better, but we all know someone who is sick."
There's also the looming threat of measles. Texas and New Mexico have seen 130 reported cases with two deaths. It is almost inevitable that the virus will make its way here.
All in all, Dr. Avegno says taking precautions and getting vaccines is the best defense to enjoy Mardi Gras.
"If you plan on being out at parades and you haven't protected yourself or your family, I would urge you to do so."
