The U.S. Attorney in New Orleans has secured a series of guilty pleas in a case of people stealing cars across the South, and illegally selling them in and around New Orleans.

U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans' office issued news releases explaining what happened.

"Co-conspirators stole cars from car dealerships and rental car facilities in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia. After the cars were stolen, these defendants would retitle the cars under fraudulent Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINS)
with the Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles."

Prosecutors say that after the cars were retitled and cloned with fraudulent VINS, the defendants would then sell the cars to buyers in the New Orleans metro area at discounted prices.

Sentencing, is set for December 8, 2022.

The defendants face up to five years in federal prison and a maximum fine of up to $250,000.

The convicts are:

-Tawuan Sylvester, 47 of New Orleans
-Aaron Thibodeaux, 36 of New Orleans
-Jonathan Bush, 35 of New Orleans
-Gregory Butle, 38 of New Orleans
