Everyone has their price: A new survey finds Louisiana drivers, on average, would want $5,349, cash, if they were forced to buy an electric vehicle.

As it turns out, federal tax credits are available that would put a couple thousand more in car buyers' pockets.

"I have great news for Louisiana car buyers, because there's currently a lot of federal tax credits that go up to about $7,500 for the purchase of an EV," said economist Cody Nehiba with the LSU Center for Energy Studies.

Nehiba says when it comes to convincing people to switch from fossil fuels to electric, research shows what people really want is for charging stations to be as convenient as gas.

"People like to have charging stations available, so charging stations subsidies actually can go a little bit further," he said. For example, most apartment dwellers can't just set up a 220V charging station on property they don't own.

"They don't have the opportunity to install fast charging stations, or any charging stations, in the house or apartment that they rent," Nehiba explained. "To an extent, having these publicly-available charging stations could help open up the EV market to a whole new set of individuals."
