Energy costs are impacting everything from the cost at the gas pump to your energy bills at home and even food prices. That has experts talking about a need to diversify those energy sources moving foward.

While Louisiana is known primarily for its oil and gas industries, Greg Upton, Executive Director of LSU’s Center for Energy Studies, says Louisiana is well-equipped to move forward in the nuclear energy sector. He points to the state’s industrial corridor as a prime spot for the development of small modular reactors (or SMRs).

While many still think of nuclear power reactors as the extremely large facilities of the past, SMRs can fit on an 18-wheeler and can produce a massive amount of energy. Upton adds that SMRs can also produce steam for industrial processes, adding another economic benefit.

Louisiana currently has two nuclear power plants producing roughly 15% of the state’s energy. Upton emphasizes that with the increasing energy needs to create EV batteries and power AI data centers, Louisiana could remain a vital hub for the entire nation.

With Meta building a $10 billion, 4 million-square-foot AI data center in Richland Parish, Louisiana, the local need for more power is being spotlighted. As technology continues to change everyone’s energy needs, Louisiana seems well positioned to provide power to the area and the nation.
