USA TODAY Sipa

Democratic and Republican leaders in Louisiana react to news President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump have both tested positive for the coronavirus.

Late Thursday night, the President tweeted he and the First Lady tested positive for the coronavirus and will begin their quarantine.

The announcement spread fast across the country prompting Louisiana leaders to send their thoughts and prayers for the President on social media.

House of Representatives Minority Whip and Representative for Louisiana, Steve Scalise sent his prayers. “They’re fighters, and will beat this together,” Scalise said in a Facebook post.

Democrat and Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards also sent his prayers for a speedy recovery for the President saying in a Facebook post, “I hope all Louisianans will join me and Donna in prayer for their health.”

Louisiana Senator Bill Cassidy, who himself contracted the disease and recovered, said in a video posted to Twitter, “My prayers everyday are for everyone who has the coronavirus but now they include the President and Melania.”

Health experts say President Trump’s age and health puts him at higher risk of serious complications from the virus which has now killed more than 200,000 people nationwide. Vice President Mike Pence and his wife Karen Pence both tested negative for the COVID-19 on Friday.
