Cops say a driver hit a 72-year-old man walking down the road in the middle of the night in Tangipahoa Parish.
"Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop L responded to a single-vehicle crash involving a pedestrian on US Highway 51 near Ponders Quarters Lane," Trooper Marc Gremillion said in a news release. "The crash ultimately claimed the life of 72-year-old Robert Baker of Amite."
He says it happened at 1:20am on Friday near Amite.
"The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee was traveling north on US Highway 51. At the same time, a pedestrian, later identified as Baker, was in the northbound lane of US Highway 51. For reasons still under investigation, the Jeep struck Baker in the roadway."
The elderly may died on the scene.
"As part of the ongoing investigation, routine toxicology samples were collected from both Baker and the driver for analysis."
There were no initial charges.
