A few weeks ago, a new and major investment was announced for Louisiana. Southern Energy Renewables will be creating sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) out of wood waste in the state thanks to a massive new plant.
Matt Jewell is President of St. Charles Parish where the facility is being constructed. The SAF plant would use already existing wood waste and wood chips from northern Louisiana where the forestry industry is prevalent, and turn that wood waste into jet fuel.
While the science behind this conversion can be hard to explain, the economic impact is plain to see. “It’s a $1.4 billion investment on the first phase and tucked away along the river on the parish line,” Jewell explained. He says some permitting is still underway, but it should create over 500 jobs, each paying six figures.
Jewell believes it’s a win-win for the region as the lumber waste that would already need to be disposed of can now be used in a new local industry as well.
