A suspect is dead and state troopers are investigating after a shooting involving a Tangipahoa Parish sheriff's deputy.

According to a Louisiana State Police spokesman, the shooting happened around midnight last night on South Baptist Road near Highway 190.

According to a state police spokesperson, Timothy Douglas, 48, Ponchatoula, led deputies on a chase in a car that had been reported stolen after deputies attempted to stop him. That chase ended at an apartment complex when Douglas ran away from the scene. A deputy followed Douglas, caught him, and used his stun gun on Douglas.

Troopers say the shooting happened moments later.

“During an attempt to take Douglas into custody, a physical altercation ensued,” a Louisiana State Police spokesman said in a statement. “Douglas resisted arrest despite multiple attempts to gain compliance. During the encounter, the deputy discharged their service weapon, striking Douglas.”

Douglas, who, according to the LSP spokesman, was in possession of a gun, later died at a hospital.

Investigators took the gun that they say Douglas had in his possession and turned it over to the LSP Crime Lab.

Anyone who was in the area who may have seen what happened or who took video and/or pictures of the incident are urged to call Louisiana State Police at 1-800-434-8007.
