New day for UNO, now LSU New Orleans
LSU New Orleans

Goodbye, UNO. Hello, LSU New Orleans. The institution often referred to as "the university that built New Orleans' middle class" reverts to its original name today, the one it was founded with in 1958.

University officials say this is more than just a name change.

LSU New Orleans' interim chancellor, Jeanette Weiland, says it's not just a name change, it's a rebirth of a research leader.

"We're coming up with some action items and implementation plans and our retention committees to involve faculty and all sorts of folks from around the university to really make sure that every effort and every resource that we're putting towards admission and enrollment is going towards the right places," Weiland told WWL's Newell Normand.

She said that LSU New Orleans also remains an affordable higher education option, with tuition competitive with the rest of the state's public universities.

"I love that we're still affordable," said Weiland. "Look at our tuition rates, compared to the entire the state, the public institutions."
