A New Orleans man convicted of shooting a Marrero bar owner in the back, leaving him paralyzed, will serve 70 years in prison under Louisiana’s habitual offender law.

Jonathon Brown was sentenced by a Jefferson Parish judge on Friday. He was convicted of attempted second-degree murder, obstruction of justice, and being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm on August 25.

The prosecution argued that Brown, 31, shot the bar owner during a fight outside Lapalco Boulevard business in 2019. That fight began after the owner ejected Brown and one of Brown’s relatives from the establishment after the relative groped the owner’s wife. Prosecutors say as the bar owner was walking away, Brown shot him four times in the back. The bar owner is now confined to a wheelchair because of his injuries.

The defense argued that Brown did not fire the shots.

According to the Jefferson Parish District Attorney’s Office, Brown was released from a state prison after serving time on a guns charge. Brown also served time previously for drugs and other guns charges.
