New Orleans Police Chief Shaun Ferguson says the man who was ran over and killed on I-10 in New Orleans East late last night was fleeing from cops on foot after police pulled over an SUV reported stolen in a carjacking in Algiers.

Ferguson says cops spotted the Chevrolet Equinox SUV which was reported stolen in a carjacking in the 900 block of Nunez Street on August 1st.

He says a pursuit began between NOPD officers and the stolen SUV on I-10 Service Road.

“At which time, three occupants fled from that vehicle. Two entered the neighborhood where the vehicle came to a stop. The third individual jumped a fence in an attempt to cross the interstate,” said Ferguson. “He was successful in crossing the interstate heading westbound but unfortunately he was struck by a vehicle heading eastbound on the I-10.”

The driver of the vehicle which hit the man was a man traveling with a woman and a child. The driver was not cited in the crash says Ferguson.

Police have not yet released the identity of the man killed in the crash. Police are still searching for the other two suspects of that stolen vehicle.
