The two men said to have escaped federal custody in Tangipahoa Parish Monday morning were being detained during a Border Patrol traffic stop, according to the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office. One of those men is now in custody.
The sheriff's office is also correcting the record about the second suspect who remains on the run.
The sheriff's office says border patrol agents had pulled over a vehicle on I-12 eastbound just shy of St. Tammany Parish. Three men in the vehicle were detained, but two men ran, still in handcuffs.
Authorities say one man fled north of I-12, and the other headed south.
"At some point during the search, 911 received a report of a handcuffed Hispanic man in a blue long-sleeve shirt and khaki pants trying to break into a mobile home on Dusty Lane which runs off of C.C. Road in the Bedico area," the sheriff's office said. "At 3 p.m., that suspect, identified as 26-year-old Eduin Gonzalez Avilez of Honduras, was taken back into custody when he emerged from the woods behind the Bedico Creek Trailer Park."
Meanwhile, deputies continue to search for Elvin Martinez. Investigators say Martinez, 31, was last seen on a trail camera near Firetower Road and Highway 190 in the Robert/Bedico/Goodbee area.
The man whom deputies originally identified as the second suspect, Cesar Contreras, 31, is no longer considered a suspect. According to a sheriff's office spokesperson, Contreras is the registered owner of the car that authorities stopped. Authorities say Contreras is cooperating with law enforcement.
