Mardi Gras parade route announcement comes this afternoon

We find out today the details on this year's Mardi Gras parade routes, and the city of New Orleans' plan for public safety.

This afternoon at Gallier Hall, Mayor LaToya Cantrell, Police Chief Michelle Woodfork, and Sheriff Susan Hutson will announce the plans for the safe return of parades to their full routes, last rolled on in 2020, right before the pandemic.

"In general, we're expecting at least the starting points of all the parades will be the same," said Mardi Gras Guide publisher Arthur Hardy. Hardy is eager to hear the full details.

"Until we actually see the maps, we don't know exactly what that looks like," he said.

It comes as welcome news not just to krewes, but the businesses that depend on Mardi Gras.

"I've heard that bars and restaurants are ordering extra supplies," Hardy said. "I know that krewe members are ordering extra throws for that extra mile."

Hardy says he hopes this isn't a one-off, and this enhanced public safety can be used for other major city events until the NOPD can reverse its losses.
