“We’re focusing very heavily on respite for the residents who are sheltering in the city of New Orleans,” Mayor LaToya Cantrell said in her opening statements to talk host Scoot.

Cantrell spoke earlier this morning about recovery plans and the state of the City a day after Hurricane Ida knocked out electricity to the entire city and Jefferson Parish.

Cantrell stated her position on whether people should make their way back:

“We believe that it’s safer for folks to stay where they are, those who evacuated and those who are in the city to continue to shelter-in-place,” Cantrell said.

Cantrell also touched on her administration’s plan to use upwards of 70 RTA buses to act as mobile cooling centers.

“We are going to utilize upwards of 70 buses that are available, we have our staff on standby as we’ve been holding them here to respond should that be needed,” Cantrell said.  “We will be activating those locations throughout the city.”
