New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell today says a shooting on Canal St. yesterday was an isolated incident and downtown is safe, after a 49-year-old man was injured when he got caught in the crossfire of two men shooting at each other.
It happened just before nine o'clock Wednesday night in the 700 block of Canal. That section of Canal includes Adler's jewelry store and the Crown Plaza hotel.
Earlier this year, the McDonald's on the block closed after more than 30 years of business there.
"The New Orleans Police Department wants to assure the public that this was an isolated incident, and our downtown community remains safe, serving as our city’s cultural, historic and economic center," said the mayor.
"Drawing hundreds of thousands of visitors every year, we must do our part to continue the progress we’ve made protecting all the people who choose to live, work and visit here," the mayor continued. "I am sending my sincerest love and prayers to all those affected by this random, senseless act of violence. The City of New Orleans has you all in our thoughts."
