The Civil Service Commission today approved New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell's NOPD recruitment and retention package.

It includes bonuses for new recruits and for officers who stay on the force.

Police Association of New Orleans president Michael Glasser says the administration still hasn't addressed the issues that police say are making them quit

"The department did a survey, and of course we talked to our officers in the exit interviews they all gave; everyone says the same thing: pay is like fourth down the line," said Glasser.

Glasser says the more important issues still have not been addressed.

"PIB (Public Integrity Bureau) was the first problem, promotions was the second problem and the manner in which those are conducted, the third issue is the consent decree constraints, and last is pay," he said.

Cantrell said the retention package will work.

"Across the City, we can all agree on the need for more public safety officers patrolling our neighborhoods," said Cantrell. "We could not agree more with what the Commission asserted at today's hearing – that government, business and community members understand the urgency and are all in support of our drive to recruit and retain officers."
