Aimee McCarron and Jason Hughes will join the New Orleans City Council in January.

McCarron and Hughes won their respective council races in Saturday’s general election. McCarron defeated Holly Friedman in the District A race. With 91 percent of precincts reporting, McCarron had 57 percent of the vote to Friedman’s 43 percent. Hughes won the District E seat by defeating Cyndi Nguyen. With 75 percent of precincts in that district reporting, Hughes led Nguyen by a 62-38 margin.

McCarron will succeed her former boss, Joe Giarrusso, as the District A councilor. McCarron served as Giarrusso’s budget and policy director. McCarron’s victory is a slight upset, as she finished second to Friedman, who also worked in Giarrusso’s council office, by 6.4 percentage points in the October primary.

Hughes currently represents New Orleans in the Louisiana House of Representatives, serving as the delegate from House District 100. Outside of politics, Hughes is a consultant for a project planning and government relations firm.
