Would converting Bourbon Street to a pedestrian-only walkway make it safer for visitors? It will be discussed in a town hall meeting tonight.

It's an idea that comes up every so often, and usually gets rejected for logistical reasons due to the hotels, restaurants, and bars found in the first eight blocks of the world-famous entertainment strip.

"Linen deliveries, food deliveries, beverage deliveries," said New Orleans City Councilmember Freddie King.

But in the wake of the New Year's Day terrorist attack that took more than a dozen lives, Kings says those discussions have been renewed, and he says it is possible they could expand the hours when Bourbon Street is closed off.

King says if people want them to, they could lock the entire French Quarter up tight, "like Ft. Knox, but would that make us no longer -- would that no longer make us the city that we are?"

King says residents will have to ask themselves, how much freedom are they willing to give up in exchange for safety?

The meeting is from 5:30 - 6:30 p.m. at the Omni Royal Orleans Hotel at 621 St. Louis St. in the French Quarter.
