The Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office is investigating the death of a 40-year-old Metairie man found dead in a jail cell Wednesday morning. Officials believe it was likely a suicide.
"He was suspended by a ligature around his neck and was pronounced dead on the scene," said sheriff's office spokesman Capt. Jason Rivarde. "His death is believed to be a suicide, and there is no indication of any foul play."
The sheriff's office did not identify the man by name, but said he had been housed at the Jefferson Parish Correctional Center since January 19 after deputies booked him on charges of first degree rape and sexual battery.
