Authorities in Jackson, Mississippi, said Monday that they are working on bringing charges against Daniel Callihan, the suspect in the murder of a mother in Loranger, kidnapping her two children, and killing one child in Jackson earlier this month.
Mississippi Public Safety Commissioner Sean Tindell says their investigation into Callihan and his alleged accomplice, Victoria Cox, is still underway.
"The attorney general's office has been assisting in this, also working with us and the district attorney's office, looking into how we can prosecute this case in the future to get a successful prosecution in this state," said Tindell.
Jackson Police Chief Joseph Wade says although no indictment in his jurisdiction has been issued yet, he has a good idea of what's coming:
"Based on our investigation, we feel confident that they are charged with the appropriate criminal charge of capital murder, both of them, and sexual battery on both of the individuals," said Wade.
A Louisiana grand jury indicted both Callihan and Cox in Callie Brunett's murder in Tangipahoa Parish, and kidnapping Brunett's two daughters, 4-year-old Erin and 6-year-old Jalie. Erin Brunett was found murdered in Jackson.
Callihan appeared in federal court in Jackson last week and waived extradition. U.S. Marshals will bring him to a jail in Louisiana.
Callihan and Cox also face federal kidnapping charges.
