More cops in French Quarter, but not necessarily NOPD

2022 will bring more cops patrolling the streets of the French Quarter, but a lot of them won't be NOPD.

With the quarter-cent sales tax reinstated in the French Quarter, and a grant from New Orleans & Company, the French Quarter Management District will hire off-duty cops to enhance law enforcement in the Vieux Carré, but not NOPD.

"We're not talking about NOPD," said French Quarter Management District Vice Chairman Christian Pendleton. "They are so short-staffed."

Pendleton says instead, they will pull from the sheriff's office, even levee police and local constables, as long as they have a law enforcement certification from the state.

"We just have to get more visible police on the street," he said.

Pendleton says if these officers catch anyone breaking the law, they will hold them until New Orleans cops can come take them to jail.

"We will detain subjects until NOPD shows up to make the arrests," said Pendleton. "In the meantime, these officers will be patrolling."
