As the escapees from Orleans Justice Center continue to be rounded up, plenty of questions remain about how much help prisoners had from those inside the facility.

Former Orleans Parish Sheriff Marlin Gusman joined WWL’s Tommy Tucker to discuss the recent jailbreak and emphasized that he believes the escapees most likely were aided by someone from inside the facility due to the number of system breakdowns that would need to happen for this sort of breach to occur.

Gusman said tools would be needed to break through the rebar that reinforces the walls, which would create a lot of noise.

“There should have been several bed checks done, several roll calls done, the public should have been notified as soon as this was discovered and certainly law enforcement should have been notified even sooner,” Gusman points out. “It sounds like they turned off the electronic security measures.
Panels in central control should have lit up when those doors that should have been closed stayed open,” he goes on to add.

Gusman called the number of breakdowns “a remarkable failure of the system.”
