Murrill: "You can't trust" New Orleans city leaders

Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill is doubling down on her calls for federal investigators to look into why and how an Orleans Parish grand jury indicted her on 16 now-dismissed felony counts of malfeasance in office and public intimidation.

So, what federal crimes does Murrill believe the grand jury committed?

"I don't know. I mean, I'm not a federal prosecutor," Murrill said to WWL's Newell Normand on Thursday.

Murrill said she won't speculate on what federal investigators might find if they launch an investigation. However, she outlined the state crimes she believes Orleans Parish officials may have committed.

"They are going to independently be the bodies that would investigate whether there was grand jury tampering or obstruction of justice or any of the other long list of potential things that might have occurred," Murrill said, referring to Louisiana State Police.

Murrill says it's not fair to accuse her of retaliating against New Orleans, its people, or the city's leaders.

"We are simply asking fair questions that they should be able to answer."

Rather, Murrill believes New Orleans leaders have made a political battle personal.

"It's extraordinary that everything they said after I get indicted is that we need to let the court system work and (let) the court system decide this. That's all I ever asked them to do," Murrill said. "These are people who never acted in good faith."

Murrill said she will still act professionally when dealing with New Orleans officials, but she says any notion of being friendly with city leaders has gone out the window.

"You can't trust people that are trying to put you in jail for 80 years for something that is not a crime. That is a personal attack," Murrill said. "The idea that they somehow magically developed a conscience and then started acting in good faith is not credible, and I do think they realized that this ship was sinking very, very fast."
