A Baton Rouge man has been arrested and charged in the death of a 7-year-old girl who was attacked by his dog.

Erick Lopez told deputies from the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office that he was not home when the attack happened and that he routinely allowed his dog to remain unrestrained outside during the day.

Sadie Davila was attacked by Lopez’s pit bull Friday afternoon while playing outside a relative’s home, about 150 yards away from Lopez’s house.

Police say Davila’s relative tried hitting the dog with a walking cane to stop the attack but was unsuccessful. Davila suffered “numerous dog bites to her face and substantial damage to her skull,” medical staff who tended to Davila told EBRSO.

Though she was transported to a local hospital for care, Davila died hours after the attack.

EBRSO deputies and East Baton Rouge Animal Control officers captured the dog following the incident.

“It is difficult to comprehend the enormous pain and remorse her family and friends are experiencing in the wake of this tragedy,” East Baton Rouge Parish Schools Superintendent Sito Narcisse wrote in an email to the families in Davila’s school district, adding that she “was blossoming in the dawn of her life and education with so much promise awaiting her.”
