New Orleans Archbishop Gregory Aymond was in Pearl River Saturday making good on his commitment to consecrate a new altar for the Saints Peter and Paul Church.

On Friday, Aymond commented on the actions of former Father Travis Clark whose alleged sexual romp with two women on the altar brought his downfall:

“Regarding Travis, his obscene behavior was deplorable.  His desecration of the altar in the church was demonic.  And I am infuriated by his actions.  When the details became clear, we had the altar removed and burned.”

The activities of Clark were not lost on parishioners: “Our church congregation is devastated we are all shocked by what conspired,” Steve Feckie told WWL-TV. Still Feckie said Christians should not judge others by their actions. “We also believe that one man does not define our Catholic faith. One man does not define our church parish and congregation. We also acknowledge Father Travis as a human being and we’re all sinful and all have our demons that we struggle with.”

The incident broke in September when Father Travis was spotted by a passerby, half dressed and having sexual relations with two women on the altar in front of cameras, stage lighting and using sex toys.
