New Orleanians see link between crime, poor city conditions

Crime, leadership, and a crumbling city: new poll data show it is all connected for New Orleans residents.

"We asked this polling question and I thought it was a particularly interesting one," said pollster Ron Faucheux, who conducted the survey for the New Orleans Crime Coalition.

The annual survey finds residents of New Orleans see a relationship between the city's blight, infrastructure issues, litter and inadequate trash pickup, and crime. Faucheux says he found the results very interesting.

"The overwhelming majority of people in the city do relate blight and abandoned buildings and trash, to general conditions of the city, which include crime," said Faucheux. "They see all of this together: crime, economic development, jobs, streets, infrastructure, the cleanliness of the city, the way the city looks, the way the city performs."

According to the poll, 79 percent see a link between general conditions of the city and crime, and 75 percent believe New Orleans is moving in the wrong direction.
