The New Orleans City Council voted 6-1 Thursday to increase the fee residents pay for trash pickup.
The $8.25 increase will bring the total monthly fee to $32.25.
The vote in favor came even after most of the public comment was strenuously against it.
"Eight dollars a month more, on my monthly income, is unacceptable to me," said New Orleans resident Deborah Jones.
Others said the increase was enough that it would make it difficult for them to afford their medication.
The Moreno administration said the fee increase is necessary because it hasn't changed since 2011, while costs have, and the difference has had to come out of the city's general fund.
"There is no correlation, before today on what the sanitation fee is, versus what the cost of sanitation actually costs," said City Council President J.P. Morrell.
The increase goes in to effect next month.
