The New Orleans City Council approved a temporary ban on non-essential travel for city officials during Thursday's meeting.
The travel spending ban is effective through the end of April.
Travel will only be allowed if the costs are 100 percent funded by state or federal money.
Council President J.P. Morrell proposed it after the Cantrell administration said the city did not have the money to pay a $20 million legal settlement with Orleans Public Schools.
