New Orleans insurance agent suspended, accused of fraud

The Louisiana Insurance Commissioner’s Office has shut down a New Orleans insurance agent and his business for allegedly committing insurance fraud.

According to Insurance Commissioner Jim Donelon, Syed Azizuddin Baghdadi and his agency, Gator Insured, LLC, falsified information and misappropriated premiums that several customers had paid. That, Donelon says, left them without insurance during parts of the 2023 hurricane season.

Donelon says the investigation into Baghdadi began after investigators received a report of suspected fraudulent activity from the Louisiana Citizens Property Insurance Corporation. That report accused Baghdadi’s agency provided them with false information about policies and properties. Donelon also says several of Baghdadi’s customers filed complaints against him, accusing him of collecting premiums but failing to remit those premiums to the insurer.

According to Donelon, Baghdadi admitted to failing to remit his customers’ premiums in a timely manner.

Baghdadi is now suspended from acting as an insurance agent in the state of Louisiana. That suspension was effective October 31. Donelon says Baghdadi has until November 30 to request an administrative appeal.
