The New Orleans Police Department's Violent Offender Warrant Squad today arrested a 41-year-old man in connection with a 3-year-old injuring herself with a firearm. Barry Frelix faces charges of second-degree cruelty to juveniles, obstruction of justice and illegal possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
"At about 10:55 p.m. on February 25, NOPD Seventh District detectives responded to an initial call that a 3-year-old juvenile female had sustained a gunshot wound," police said. "The victim is believed to have located a firearm in the home and to have discharged the weapon, causing non-fatal injuries to herself."
Police say Frelix, the child's father, lied to them about what happened.
"Based on these determinations, detectives applied for and secured an arrest warrant for Frelix in this investigation," said authorities.
