The New Orleans City Council is weighing rolling forward a number of property tax millages to fill the city's budget gap.
So where would those tax dollars go?
Two of the millages put money in the city's general fund.
"If those are rolled forward all the way for 1.82 mills, that could potentially generate $10 million dollars in additional revenue," New Orleans Chief Administrative Officer Joe Giarrusso said during Monday's city council budget hearings.
The other millages City Hall wants to roll forward are dedicated to funding police and fire protection, parks and parkways, recreation, early childhood education, and the city's libraries.
"The goal would obviously be that this takes pressure off the general fund as a result of this money being infused."
In all, the millage roll forward would bring in a total of $42 million in revenue for the city.
But how much will your property taxes increase if the New Orleans City Council rolls forward local millages? According to Giarrusso, the increase will be minimal. He cited the figures for property valued at $200,000 and with a homestead exemption.
"If all these millages were rolled forward, the annual increase would be $103.94. That is a monthly increase of only $8.66," Giarrusso said.
