Twenty-one years ago, Hurricane Katrina flooded much of the city of New Orleans and scattered its population, sending even its beloved Saints to three different "home" stadiums that season. Twenty years ago, the Saints returned home.
Tonight's Monday Night Football game versus the Atlanta Falcons will mark that anniversary.
The moment Saints specialist Steve Gleason broke through the Falcons line to send a punt into the end zone, recovered by Curtis DeLoatch for the touchdown, has been hailed as the moment of rebirth for the city and the franchise.
Today at 3:00pm, Gleason will be honored at Gallier Hall.
"Mayor Moreno's going to present Steve with the key to the city of New Orleans and make some remarks. Then we'll hear from Steve," said Mardi Gras World owner Barry Kern. "Drew Brees is going to be on hand; we're going to have a bunch, some of the old players are going to be on hand."
Mardi Gras World owner Barry Kern says after that event there will be a parade up toward the Superdome, as the crowd pre-games for tonight's showdown versus Atlanta.
