An inmate at the Orleans Justice Center managed to slip outside the facility this afternoon. The Orleans Sheriff's Office says his freedom lasted about 28 seconds.
"At approximately 1:20 PM today, leadership were alerted of a possible escape attempt involving an inmate being transported back to the Orleans Justice Center Facility from court," the sheriff's office said.
Authorities say the inmate, whom they identified as Anthony Green, hid behind a trash can in the jail's sallyport gate. That's the double-gated area that allows for secure movement in and out of the jail.
When the exterior gate opened for the next transport vehicle, Green exited to the outside of the secure perimeter, according to the sheriff's office.
A guard saw the escape on a security monitor and immediately notified deputies in the area.
"The deputies exited their vehicles and immediately took the inmate into custody," the sheriff's office said. "The inmate was outside the facility for approximately 28 seconds before being taken into custody, and never left the grounds of OJC."
The incident is under investigation and the sheriff's office says the inmate will be rebooked on appropriate charges.
