The city of New Orleans at 4 p.m. today is set to announce new mitigation efforts as the Delta variant of COVID-19 causes a fourth surge of the pandemic.
"All options are on the table," said New Orleans Mayor's office spokesman Beau Tidwell.
Tidwell says the rise in case numbers is startling, and they will do everything they can to get that under control.
"Vaccinations are absolutely going to be the key in this," he said. "Masks are certainly something they're looking at. It's under consideration. It's a strong possibility."
New Orleans dropped mask mandates for the vaccinated in May, though anyone who is not two weeks past their final shot needs to keep wearing them
Tidwell said full capacity at events like Saints games and Jazz Fest depend on the numbers coming down: "It potentially puts not only the process that we have made at risk, but all the exciting things we were looking forward to this fall."
Mayor LaToya Cantrell and city health director Dr. Jennifer Avegno will have more to say this afternoon.
