Newell: Anarchy reigns as Cantrell and City Council members overlook laws

On Thursday the Louisiana Bond Commission denied a $39 million line of credit for the New Orleans Sewerage and Water Board to build an electrical substation. Also of note at that meeting, Louisiana Secretary of State Kyle Ardoin recommended Mayor LaToya Cantrell and the City Council be removed from office for openly saving they would protect abortion access in the city, in spite of state law. I've talked about this issue several times. In fact, I interviewed some of the New Orleans City Council members about this issue. I said that we are on a slippery slope when elected officials violate the separation of powers doctrine.

I agree with Ardoin. To unilaterally decide on an ideological whim to just not enforce the laws as passed by legislative bodies is anarchy. Every one of those elected officials took an oath of office.  These are the same people that insisted past U.S. Supreme Court nominees lied about their intentions for abortion protections at their confirmation hearings. Well, if the SCOTUS justices lied, then the Mayor and Council members also lied when they were sworn in, if they had no intention of enforcing the laws and respecting the separation of powers doctrine in this country.

Now, I don't agree with the withholding of the $39 millions credit line. I think that exercise of authority is equally misplaced, because all it does is perpetuate political warfare games. That power generation plant for the city of New Orleans is absolutely critical.

Again, Ardoin is right. The very definition of anarchy is a stated disorder due to absence or non recognition of authority. Where does this end? When I was sheriff I didn’t get to choose which laws I wanted to enforce. We have completely lost sight of what it is  we ought to be doing as elected leaders in this country!
