Newell: The Saints a massive part of WWL Radio’s rich history

Former Voice of the Saints Jim Henderson and Former Color Commentator Hokie Gajan
WWL Radio

Our broadcasts of Saints games have been huge for WWL Radio. There’s been so many different memories, not only for the station, but for the city of New Orleans, the state, and the Gulf South region. Former WWL Radio Host and news icon Angela Hill and I spoke with Saints and Pelicans Owner Gayle Benson about the special relationship between WWL and the Saints and how the broadcasts have created everlasting memories.

AH: Gayle, do you remember as a little girl listening to WWL Radio?

Absolutely, we didn't have TV then but yes we did listen… You felt like you were with someone because you were listening to them give the news and about what was going on in the community. The great thing about WWL is the talent, because they all have New Orleans ties and a passion for its region. The community has relied on WWL for sports, especially the Saints over the years. The station continues to be a reliable source for major weather events, hurricanes, and being up to date. They’re just an iconic station. WWL has evolved along with this city and I think people just adore the station and they depend on it for their news.

NN: Throughout the high and lows of the organization, what are the moments that standout to you?

I remember Jim Henderson’s call of the Saints winning the Super Bowl XLIV. It just gave me a thrill. It was unbelievable when we came back after Hurricane Katrina. We really value our relationship with WWL and we look forward to continuing this relationship into the next century.

AH: You just came back from the NFL owners meeting. How do you feel about the team you’re building with new head coach Dennis Allen?

Dennis is going to be so good. He's just so kind, thoughtful, and gracious.  How Allen handles himself reminds me of Pelicans head coach Willie Green in that way. Never yells and shouts, he just explains to his team why we didn't win or why we did win. With GM Mickey Loomis and Dennis Allen we’re going to be great. I'm really looking forward to Jameis Winston and our players getting together.

NN:  Any anxiety as we approach the NFL draft?

The draft can be a little stressful. I don't say much, but I'm in the draft room. The thing for me is when we’re waiting to choose somebody and we choose someone  that they really want. Then in the next sentence they say they're trading and then I'm like, ‘oh my goodness!’
