The New Orleans City Council puts its money where its mouth is, supporting affordable housing, with the passage of two measures on Thursday.
The reauthorization of the Neighborhood Housing Improvement Fund keeps in place the usage of tax dollars for the purpose of promoting the building of more affordable housing alongside market-rate properties in the City.
“We’re one of the few cities in the country and the only place in the state of Louisiana—no one else does—committing it’s own tax resources to address affordable housing. Not the state itself and no other city in the state," says Andreanecia Morris, Executive Director of HousingNOLA.
The other measure to pass is the Smart Housing Mix, the policy that came out of HousingNOLA's 10-Year Strategy & Implementation Plan released in 2015 to end New Orleans' affordable Housing crisis. It focuses on growing the number of affordable housing options by incentivizing lower-priced homes and apartments with otherwise market-rate developments.
