The most recent push to restore drive-thru daiquiri shop service in Slidell has hit another snag. The Slidell City Council voted 5-3 on Tuesday to indefinitely postpone an ordinance that would have eliminated the city’s ban on drive-up and drive-thru windows at businesses that sell alcohol.
While that proposed ordinance is likely dead, the city attorney did remark that a similar measure might be introduced at some point in the future. This means drive-thru alcohol sales will continue to be banned inside Slidell city limits.
Much of the debate surrounding the ban has focused on the business competition aspect, although there are worries from others about drunk driving and public safety. Supporters of the restoration argue that the ban puts Slidell businesses at a marked disadvantage as there are multiple daiquiri shops just outside of city limits that offer drive-thru service. Some Slidell daiquiri shop owners who have spoken in favor of the ordinance say they’re at a competitive disadvantage simply because of where the city limits fall.
While the ordinance is dead in the water for now, debate is more than likely to continue. Some Slidell daiquiri shops that cannot offer drive-thru service sit along the very same road as others who can because of where city limits lie.
